EMDR Therapy at Salt & Earth Psychology
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy. It is designed to help people process difficult experiences and manage distressing memories. At Salt & Earth Psychology, EMDR is used for a range of experiences—from significant trauma to everyday stress, anxiety, and challenging memories.
What EMDR Is Used For
EMDR may be used for experiences that feel “stuck” or overwhelming. Examples include:
Past events that continue to cause distress
Anxiety, panic, or intrusive thoughts
Stress from work, study, or family responsibilities
Sexual, relationship, or intimacy difficulties
Confidence or self-esteem challenges
EMDR is not exclusively helpful for traumatic events. It can be used to help with smaller, yet impactful experiences, or even fears about the future.
How EMDR Works
During EMDR, you focus on a memory or feeling while noticing guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation. This helps the brain process the memory safely.
Sessions generally follow these steps:
Preparation – building coping strategies and understanding the process
Assessment – identifying memories or issues to work on
Processing – guided bilateral stimulation
Integration – noticing shifts in perspective or emotional intensity
Re-evaluation – reviewing progress and planning next steps
The therapist moves at your pace. The process is collaborative and focuses on your current goals.
Who EMDR Can Support
EMDR may be helpful for adults experiencing:
Anxiety, panic, or stress
Trauma, including accidents, loss, or childhood experiences
Relationship or intimacy challenges
Emotional overwhelm from daily life
Difficulty moving on from upsetting experiences
Even if you do not identify with “trauma,” EMDR may provide support for managing challenging memories or emotions.
